Petition to the ICC: Uphold the Rule of Law and Respect Philippine Sovereignty

We, the undersigned, call on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to uphold the Rule of Law and respect the sovereignty of the Philippines. As a court of last resort, the ICC must acknowledge that the Philippines is no longer a member of the ICC and, therefore, should return former President Rodrigo Duterte to the Philippines. The judicial system of the country must be allowed to function independently and handle any complaints against him.

The ICC must demonstrate to the world that it is impartial, non-partisan, and committed to justice rather than political agendas. Millions of people in the Philippines and around the world admire and support President Duterte for his strong leadership, particularly in his fight against drug-related crimes, graft, and corruption. His unwavering stance against these societal ills has made him a target of drug syndicates and corrupt officials.

We urge the ICC to recognize the Philippine judiciary’s authority and allow due process to take place within the country’s legal framework. Let justice be served by the institutions that are constitutionally mandated to uphold it.

Upholding the Rule of Law: A Call for Judicial Integrity and National Sovereignty

The Philippines is a sovereign nation with a fully functional and independent judicial system. As a democratic republic, it upholds the rule of law, ensuring that justice is served through due process and legal mechanisms. Recent developments concerning the potential legal actions against former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte have ignited discussions about the integrity of our judicial institutions, national sovereignty, and the role of international bodies in domestic affairs.

The Rule of Law as the Cornerstone of Democracy

The rule of law is a fundamental principle that guarantees equality before the law, fair trials, and due process. In the Philippines, our judicial system has long been established to uphold justice, providing a structured legal framework for both prosecution and defense. Any legal actions against any individual, regardless of status or position, must follow the processes dictated by the Constitution and the laws enacted by the legislature.

Our courts, from the lower tribunals to the Supreme Court, have shown their capability to handle cases involving high-ranking officials. Landmark decisions in the past have proven that the Philippine judiciary operates independently, rendering verdicts based on evidence, legal arguments, and constitutional principles. The separation of powers between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches ensures that no one is above the law.

National Sovereignty and Judicial Independence

The Philippines is an independent nation, and as such, it must be respected as the sole arbiter of justice within its own jurisdiction. International bodies and foreign entities should recognize that the Philippine legal system is capable of addressing allegations against any individual within the framework of the law. The arrest or prosecution of any citizen, especially a former head of state, must be done within our legal jurisdiction, without undue influence from external forces.

If the people behind the potential arrest and prosecution of former President Duterte are confident that he has committed crimes and that there is certainty of conviction, then the appropriate course of action is to file a case in the Philippine courts. This ensures that the due process of law is followed, reinforcing the legitimacy of our judicial system while upholding our sovereignty.

Furthermore, the International Criminal Court (ICC), as a court of last resort, must recognize that the Philippines is no longer a member of the ICC. The tribunal should respect the nation’s sovereignty and acknowledge that it no longer has jurisdiction over the Philippines. As such, if there are legal matters concerning former President Duterte, he should be returned to the Philippines so that the country’s judicial system can properly hear the complaints against him. This will allow due process to take its rightful course within the framework of Philippine law.

The Call for Legal Transparency and Due Process

Justice must be pursued through legal channels that respect the constitutional rights of every individual. Any allegations must be supported by substantial evidence and subjected to the scrutiny of the courts. The presumption of innocence remains a core principle of our legal system, and every accused individual, regardless of political affiliation, deserves a fair trial.

Furthermore, the legal process must remain free from political motivations and external pressures. Upholding the rule of law means ensuring that justice is administered without bias or prejudice. It is in the best interest of the Filipino people that cases are adjudicated in a manner that reinforces trust in our legal institutions.

A United Stand for the Rule of Law

As a nation, we must stand united in protecting the integrity of our judicial system. We cannot allow external forces to dictate how we administer justice within our own borders. The call is simple: If there is a case to be made, let it be heard in our local courts. Let our judges, our prosecutors, and our legal experts determine the merits of the case without foreign interference.

The Philippines is a country governed by laws, not by political convenience or external influence. By upholding the rule of law, we affirm our commitment to justice, national sovereignty, and democratic principles. Let us continue to strengthen our institutions and ensure that justice is always served within the bounds of our Constitution and legal system.
